The International Society for Biblical Hermeneutics
Developing and Promoting Grammatical-Historicism
Commonly Asked Questions
What is biblical hermeneutics?
Hermeneutics is the study of interpretation; biblical hermeneutics is the study of Bible interpretation.
There have been countless proposed methods for interpreting the Bible. The International Society for Biblical Hermeneutics advocates the grammatical-historical method.
Grammatical-historical hermeneutics essentially seeks to understand and accept the plain meaning of the original text of Scripture in its original context. This approach to the Bible begins with an affirmation of the verbal-plenary inspiration, inerrancy, and infallibility of the Word of God and results in coherent, cohesive, and consistent interpretation.
What is dispensationalism?
In short, dispensationalism is a school of thought that results from reading the Bible plainly and therefore recognizes a distinction between Israel and the Church and sees the glory of God as the main purpose of history. For a longer description of what we believe, see our doctrinal statement.
What does the International Society for Biblical Hermeneutics do?
The International Society for Biblical Hermeneutics develops and promotes grammatical-historical hermeneutics by serving as a hub to organize dispensational research and teaching in a way that is beneficial to modern international audiences. Activities include symposiums, conferences, and webinars, as well as interviews and publishing.
